In 2011 I was looking for a new house for my family and happened on an old abandonded building that was a perfect blank canvas for my idea. My team and I gutted the entire building and practically started from scratch. My goal was to create a functional and comfortable open plan layout using low impact and reclaimed materials.

Dar es Salaam heat and humidity can be very uncomfortable and I am not a fan of air conditioning, so I used a reflective thermal barrier in the roofing and strategic window placement to let the tropical breeze cool the house.

All the pieces of the house have a story. The doors and windows are all salvaged from  a beautiful old indian building that was unfortunatley being demolished downtown. The wood for our kitchens and cupboards came from an old fishing boat that I found wrecked on the coast.

This home was built with memories and stories of my families life in Tanzania and continues to create them every day.
